Am I too old for orthodontic treatment?

In short, no, you are never too old for orthodontic treatment. Your orthodontist considers many variables when developing your customized treatment plan, but age is rarely a deciding factor. Orthodontic treatment can be as successful for adults as it is for adolescents. In fact, one in three orthodontic patients is an adult.

The biggest difference in orthodontics for adults versus children/teens is that adults are no longer growing. Adult treatment may take slightly longer than treatment for children/teens with a similar problem due to the maturity and density of the bone adults have. Some bigger problem with jaw size might not be correctable without surgery, however, there are many other options available to improve the appearance of their smile.

They may have fillings, missing teeth, tooth wear or other dental problems that may require the orthodontist to coordinate with their family dentist before, during or after orthodontic treatment.

How long is the estimated treatment time for adult orthodontics?

Treatment time depends on the severity of the problem but, on average it lasts 18-24 months. During that time appointments are scheduled about every six to eight weeks. The orthodontist will go over all the viable options available to you such as clear aligner therapy, self-ligating brackets and traditional braces.
